Businessman.
A capitalist, Black is the owner of many newspapers in Canada and other countries, and built a large holding company, called Argus Corporation.
In 1985, he purchased the Daily Telegraph (London, England), one of the world's largest English-language newspapers of quality. In Canada, Holinger International, another of Black's companies, now owns the Southam chain of newspapers, and it also owns about forty smaller newspapers in the USA.
In October 1998, Black turned The Financial Post into a national daily newspaper, The National Post (Toronto), his ideologically conservative newspaper, which competes with The Globe and Mail (Toronto), a liberal-minded newspaper, and the only other newspaper with daily circulation across Canada.
Black also owns Saturday Night (Toronto), Canada's longest-running magazine, which was established in 1887.
