Canada is also a member of the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Its World Heritage Convention obliges nations to protect places of unique natural and cultural value of significance to all mankind.
Under UNESCO's designation, the following have World Heritage Site status:
- Kluane National Park (YT)
- Nahanni National Park (NWT)
- Wood Buffalo National Park (AB)
- L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site (NF)
- Burgess Shale National Historic Site, in Yoho National Park (BC)
- Anthony Island, in Gwaii Haanas Park National Park Reserve (BC)
As well, World Heritage Site status has been given to a combination of contiguous parks called the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks. These include
- Yoho National Park (BC)
- Jasper National Park (AB)
- Banff National Park (AB)
- Kootenay National Park (BC)
- Hamber Provincial Park (BC)
- Mount Robson Provincial Park (BC)
- Mt Assiniboine Provincial Park (AB)
UNESCO also has a Man and Biosphere Programme. Under it, Biosphere Reserve status has been given to
- Waterton Lakes National Park (AB)
- Riding Mountain National Park (MB), and
- Bruce Peninsula National Park (ON)
- Clayoquot Sound (BC)
