Leisure-time activities by Canadians include television viewing, reading and physical activity. As well, Canadians enjoy travelling. On average, Canadians watch telelvision for 23 hours every week. The highest rate is among French-language viewers in Quebec (27%) and the lowest among Albertans (just under 20%).
In their choice of music, Canadians attend more pop and rock concerts than concerts of any other type of music. 16.3% attend pop and rock concerts while jazz and blues attract 6%, country and western 4.5%, opera 4.4%, and folk music, contemporary classical, chamber music and soloists, and choral music all attract 3% or less of Canadians. Less than 3% of Canadians take in ballet or contemporary dance, while about 12% attend the theatre with musical comedies being the most popular fare.
Newspapers are read by 83% of Canadians at least once a week, while 63% read magazines and 44% read books on a weekly basis. Among children, hockey is played by 13% of the population under the age of fifteen, while baseball attracts 16% of this age group, swimming 14%, basketball 11%, volleyball and soccer (football) each 10%, and downhill skiing 7%.
