People of Canada
This module introduces you to Canadians generally and then to thirty famous Canadians. The aim is thus twofold:
- to understand some of the common qualities of the life that Canadians lead, and
- to learn what some Canadians, from both the past and the present, have done to distinguish themselves nationally and internationally.
It a lso introduces students to the idea that Canada is made up of many cultures. This fact is captured by Canada's official policy of Multiculturalism, a policy that acknowledges and responds to Canada's character as a nation of immigrants and ongoing immigration. The module concludes with profiles of two of Canada's cultures.
The people of Canada may be studied generally under the following headings:
- Culture
Culture and cultural activities - music, dance, visual art, writing, drama, etc. - are very important to Canadians.
- Multiculturalism
Canadians take great pride in accepting and celebrating difference and diversity.
- Canadians and USAmericans
Canadians appear to be very similar to Americans: and they are. However, there are some very important differences as well.
- Profile of Inuit
The Inuit are Canada's northern people. They and their part of Canada are part of what makes this country unique.
- Profile of Québecois
Québecois, one of Canada's founding peoples, are French-speaking citizens of Québec.
